AFIF 2011
Despite the international crisis, there is a strong
feeling that the last few years have been positive for the African Continent, with
an average annual growth of over 5%, the best in the past 40 years. Poverty has
fallen and progress made towards sustainable development.
In many countries in sub-Saharan Africa with underdeveloped financial
markets, private equity is one of the only sources of capital available to
enterprises to develop their businesses.
Traditionally, EMRC Africa Finance & Investment Forum has been travelled
around Europe: in 2007 the forum was held in Lisbon under the patronage of the
Portuguese EU Presidency, in 2008 in Paris coinciding with the French EU
Presidency and in 2009 the Forum took place in Amsterdam because The
Netherlands is heavily supporting Africa through development programmes and
investment initiatives. AFIF2009 was organized in partnership with Dutch National
and commercial entities, like FMO, Heineken, ABN AMRO Bank (where it was held),
BiD Network and others.
Another EMRC annual business event is the Agribusiness Forum, which for
the first time was held in Africa (Cape Town) in June 2009. Following this
first success (around 450 and many partners), Agribusiness Forum 2010 will be
organized again in Africa, in Kampala (3-6 October 2010), hosted by the
Government of Uganda.
